When I come down with the common cold, I apply the holistic healing methods I believe in so deeply, as if I am my own patient. It’s important to note that these methods are meant to complement conventional pharmaceutical treatments, and not replace them. Modern medicine has its place, and I fully support using it when needed. However, I find that by integrating holistic practices alongside pharmaceutical treatments, the healing process is often more effective, natural, and balanced.

Instead of relying solely on traditional over-the-counter medications, I focus on healing my body through a combination of self-care techniques that address the physical, emotional, and mental aspects of my well-being.
Here’s how I treat myself using the modalities I offer in my practice, ensuring that I heal in a way that nurtures both body and spirit.
Listening to My Subconscious for Guidance
The first step I always take when feeling unwell is to check in with my subconscious. I believe that illness often carries a deeper message about areas of imbalance or stress in my life. To gain insight, I turn to symbol interpretation techniques, in particular, cartomancy and runology. I ask my subconscious what I need to pay attention to in order to strengthen my immune system and prevent future illness.
I sit in quiet meditation, pulling a card and interpreting symbols that might point to emotional blocks or unheeded messages. This practice allows me to gain clarity on aspects of my life that might have contributed to my vulnerability to the cold, such as stress or feelings of overwhelm. It is a gentle reminder to pay more attention to self-care and emotional balance.
Using Chromotherapy and Aromatherapy to Alleviate Symptoms
Once I feel mentally and emotionally grounded, I turn to chromotherapy and aromatherapy to soothe my physical symptoms. I use a combination of essential oils known for their ability to support the respiratory system and calm congestion.
Solarised Water: To stay hydrated and take advantage of the healing benefits of chromotherapy, I drink solarised water. For soothing my cold symptoms, I use blue glass bottles. The colour blue is known for its calming and healing properties, making it perfect for easing the symptoms of a cold. Blue is known to promote relaxation, reduce inflammation, and help with respiratory issues like congestion and sore throats. Drinking the solarised water nourishes my body and enhances my healing process through the power of chromotherapy.
Healing Bath with Organic Bath Salts: To ease the physical discomfort, I take a warm bath with handcrafted organic bath salts. These bath salts are infused with a blend of essential oils like lavender, rosemary, and eucalyptus, all of which are known for their respiratory and immune-boosting benefits. The warmth of the water helps soothe my aching body, while the oils work to clear my sinuses and reduce muscle tension.
This combination of chromotherapy (through the use of coloured glass bottles) and aromatherapy provides symptom relief and helps me to relax and rest, which is essential for healing.
Phytotherapy to Boost Immunity and Treat Symptoms
To further support my immune system, I turn to phytotherapy, the use of plants and herbs for healing. I brew a few different teas to help alleviate the symptoms of my cold:
Fir Needles Tea: For the headache and sinus pressure I often get with a cold, I make a strong cup of fir needles tea. Fir needles are rich in vitamin C and have anti-inflammatory properties that help reduce headache symptoms and ease congestion. The earthy, refreshing taste of the tea helps me feel grounded while providing my body with immune-boosting nutrients.
Onion Skin Tea: While not the most pleasant option, onion peel tea is a time-tested remedy for cold symptoms. Onions contain antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds that help reduce nasal congestion and support overall immune function. Despite its strong and somewhat pungent taste, I find the tea to be incredibly effective. I drink it in the morning and again in the evening to keep my symptoms manageable.
These herbal teas work in harmony with the essential oils to clear my sinuses, reduce inflammation, and support my body’s ability to fight off the cold.
Ecotherapy for Mental Clarity and Fresh Air
Finally, I know that staying cooped up in a stuffy room would only prolong my recovery. That’s why I incorporate ecotherapy into my treatment plan. The stale air indoors isn’t helping my cold, so I take regular breaks to get outside.
Light Ecotherapy Walk: I go for short walks in the park (nothing too strenuous, just light walking to breathe in fresh air and gently stimulate circulation). The sounds of nature, the warmth of the sun, and the feeling of being outside in the natural world do wonders for my mental and emotional well-being. Walking among trees and greenery help clear my head, reduce my stress, and recharge my energy, all while aiding in my physical recovery. Nature’s healing energy provides the perfect antidote to the physical discomforts.
Spending time outside helps me to breathe better and gives my mind a break from the monotony of being ill, which is vital for healing.
A Holistic Approach to Healing
By combining subconscious exploration, aromatherapy, phytotherapy, and ecotherapy, I’m able to treat a cold in a way that supports my whole well-being. This is about listening deeply to what my body is asking for and addressing both the symptoms and the underlying imbalances that allowed them to take root.
Healing, at its core, is less about simply “managing” symptoms and more about nurturing the entire self — body, mind, and spirit — and giving each part the care it needs to restore balance. When I take this approach, I find that recovery comes more naturally, gently, and completely.
